Finally valve have released an update to source to improve voice communications and game chat text. Here's the official blurb:
  • Improved multiplayer voice communication, now using a much clearer codec
  • First release of a completely reworked in game text chat to which now includes a chat history and a filter to only see important chat messages
  • Fixed not being able to use sounds, decals or models if they were downloaded from the server
  • Linux Fix: A fix for the problem has been released, if you run your server with "-autoupdate" on the command line it will automatically be applied. Otherwise run the hldsupdatetool to get the update
As well as this source update, Game Informer has posted a news item about some future source updates for HL2:Episode 2.
  • For those who recently upgraded their PC video cards to support DX10, you’ll be happy to know that both Episode Two and Team Fortress 2 will support the advancedtechnology of these cards, even if the PC is running Windows XP. On the low-end front, Valve still plans on supporting PCs that can only run DX8 applications. Valve's attempting to also support DX7, but couldn't confirm if it'd go back that far with technology.
As well as this DirectX news, Doug also mentions that contrary to popular belief, the release date delays aren't due to the console ports, but rather the fact that none of the three games included in the bundle are actually 100% complete.

But that's not all the Episode 2 news! - Doug Lombardi has also said that Episode 2 will be noticeably longer than Episode 1:
  • "Episode 1 was about six hours of gameplay, and Episode 2 will be closer to eight hours of gameplay"
But, despite some of the set-backs, the development time for the episodic content was getting shorter:
  • "Episode 1 took 18 months to complete and Episode 2 will end up being about 13 to 14 months, so we're trimming it down," he said. "I think we'll get closer to a year and be on 12 month cycle. We'll see how it goes after this trilogy is done."
Doug Lombardi also makes mention of upcoming Steam enhancements that include customized player stat tracking and score rankings.
