So by now there’s a slight chance you’ve heard something about a little game called Gears of War® 2. Well, the secret is out: Marcus Fenix returns in November 2008, and things just got a lot more interesting. Gears 2 is under development at Epic Games, the studio that created the original blockbuster, and they are hell-bent on bringing a bigger, badder, and even more intense experience to your Xbox 360® this holiday.
The first Gears of War was a technical masterpiece that introduced gamers, in glorious and gory detail, to the full potential of high-definition visuals. By utilizing the technological advances built into the Unreal® Engine 3, Gears 2 is primed to raise the bar yet again. Do you think you know all about "Destroyed Beauty?" Just wait.
Gears of War 2 will continue the saga of Marcus Fenix and Delta Squad as they fight to save humanity from the overwhelming onslaught of the Locust Horde, and will mix the series’ trademark tactical action gameplay with an epic story of survival, loss, and retribution—and killing Locust. Lots and lots of Locust. So whatever assumptions you’ve made, forget ‘em. Whatever your expectations are, raise ‘em, because Gears of War 2 is coming. November 2008 is right around the corner, and it’s going to be one hell of a ride.
SourceWell i am excited cause i didn't think 2008 would be the year for the sequel.
anyone else a bit hyped for this?

The first game was so brutal and atmospheric, and the action was pure awesome. Gears of War was a great game. I seriously hope Epic doesn't outdo themselves and release a pile of crap like Bungie did with Halo 2.

Something to consider, but Epic has more games under its belt then bungie did, im expecting a lot of out of GoW2, hopefully it stands up to the first as a good sequel

Gears' story is epic? Ha. It'll be more of the same, but with a few minor graphical improvements to the engine. Still, I'll be getting it.

First gameplay video:
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/33780.htmlLooks like Gears 1.5 as I suspected, not necessarily a bad thing however seeming the original was so strong. The using injured Locust as a shield is pretty stupid though, the story has so far shown they wouldn't think twice about sacrificing hundreds of their own to get at one COG trooper, let alone just a single injured being used as a meatshield.

it seems to me that it was just there to stop bullets I don't think the locusts were afraid of shooting at it.

May 10 2008, 11:28 AM
The one in the video shoots at whoever is to the right/behind Marcus instead, so it's anyone's guess if it's 'hostage' or 'shield'.
Which reminds me of the second part of what I meant to post, a COG shouldn't be able to manhandle a Locust anyway, even an injured one, if not for the fact it would be highly dangerous and utterly pointless seeming it would just struggle with no concern for it's own well-being, then for the fact they would appear to weigh neigh on triple that of a COG.

It looks fun, all I really got out of Gears was blasting the fuck out of everything and hoping my foes' guts splattered well. And I also think the first Gears had an awesome atmosphere. But that might just be me. I'll probably end up buying this.

Annoying? It'll put an end to the 'kill goes to whoever has the best latency / might as well not bother using it if you're playing with foreign friends' bullshit that happens as it is when two people chainsaw eachother now, and for that it's great IMO. And yes graphics have had a minor improvement, they released a tech video a while back showcasing some of it.

I never considered it in a multiplayer setting I always hated GoW online... Indeed mostly due to my latency I think. Halo and other games just did much better with my internet connection. In campaign mode it would seem to me that I might find myself going at it with a single locust for a minute and a half not getting anywhere. Which would get monotonous.

I predict it's really only going to be the hardcore fanboys who go for this title. I'm a sucker for a good advertising campaign and they've not really grabbed even MY attention. There's other stuff I could buy with the money.

I'd say that's more due to the fact that everyone who wanted to play it has already played the console version anyway, they don't help themselves in some cases by announcing the PC version until several months after the console release. I don't like how developers are jumping on the piracy bandwagon and using that as an excuse to move away from the PC. I hope they realise that PC gamers made them and they'd be nothing without them.

ITT: Tightfists and people without 360s moan because they can't pirate it this time around.
There's three main reasons PC gaming is dying, in order of severity:
Piracy.
Costs burdened on the player.
Lack of profit compared to consoles.
That is all.

No, but PC piracy is on a totally different scale to console piracy. The few thousand illegally downloaded copies of a console game scarcely makes a scratch on sales, unlike the several hundred thousand you'll find on the PC.

True, and most people as you said don't pirate console games due to the fact it is more difficult and the consequence aren't worth it (Getting your console and profile banned from XBOXLIVE)

Oct 2 2008, 11:48 PM
It's not easy because it requires know-how, custom hardware/chips/drives, and constant fiddling. And in the case of the 360 as far as I know there's still no way to play on Live properly without a shit ton of hassle and/or consequences.

No hardware or chipping needed, get on live fine and find all information on google, my point wasn't so much how easy it was either, rather that it exists and using piracy as some sort of get out of everything excuse is pathetic for the devs, most of whom were made successful by pc gamers.

If you're referring to modifying firmware, that goes in the same non-easy, non-safe, non-practical category with the other mods. If you're not, I'm very interested to see what you're referring to because only a few days ago I was discussing this with several people I know who are into console modding/repairs and they've never heard of such a thing, or any easy way to get and stay on Live without risking bans.
As for piracy, it's a developers primary concern, and they're doing nothing wrong by migrating to console development in order to protect their interests. Only thing some of them are doing wrong is resorting to draconian DRM, but that craze will be over soon.

That won't be the case, it'll be a mixture of piracy paranoia, GoW 1 sales and making people buy the 360 version without waiting incase a PC one comes out.
