US, April 25, 2007 - Just when you were about ready to run up to the window and yell, "I'm mad as ****** at World War II shooters, and I'm not gonna take it anymore!", Activision and developer Infinity Ward are announcing today that the fourth entry in the Call of Duty franchise is moving on from World War II.
The game is not quite ready to be unveiled (the game's debut trailer is being debuted on ESPN during the NFL Draft on Saturday), but the subtitle of the game gives away the new direction: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is Call of Duty like we've never seen it before. The game looks set to transfer combat operations from WWII to the modern battlefields our soldiers face today.
Little is known about Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare at the moment, but we're hopeful that the move to recent times also ushers in other big changes for the acclaimed franchise. Although some gamers are bound to feel that this sequel is coming uncomfortably quick on the heels of Call of Duty 3, franchise creator Infinity Ward has actually had a good deal of time to work on part 4 -- developer Treyarch handled COD3 while COD4 was deep in development. Activision has not yet announced which platforms the game will be released on, but IGN confirmed in February of 2006 that the development team had been scoping this game out primarily for Xbox 360 and PS3.
Look for the worldwide debut of the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare trailer Saturday, April 28 on ESPN at 10 am Pacific Time / 1 pm Eastern Time during the NFL Draft.

I just hope it's developed primarily for PC, and then ported over to consoles and toned down as needed into a seperate game for the 'casual' console folks, like it used to be... But I think the truth is (suprise suprise) it will be developed mainly for the larger more profitable console playerbase first, dumbed down into a heap of shit, ruining all potentional, and then ported over to the loyal PC gamers who made the developers who they are in the first place. Certainly seems to be the new trend. Sigh.
So anyway, thoughts on what this game about? Seeming it's modern I'm presuming it'll be Americans vs. communists/Arabs/terrorists/Arab terrorists. Maybe an evil fictional communist nation who funds Arab terrorists?

Tactical modern warfare. That's what they mean by modern. Urban environment maybe?
I'm awfully tired of the open desert environments though, they should focus on highly vegetated terrain to provide more cover for the enemy and the player, which is what I haven't seen in any
good war game.
Elanzer
Apr 26 2007, 06:11 PM
No doubt there will be plenty of Urban environments in there somewhere no matter what it is, but yeah decent forests would be a nice feature too, havn't had any since Vietcong. IMO Modern warfare can only really point to the Iraq/Afghanistan/Middle-East though, and seeming the 'war' there isn't much more than bombing, patrolling, avoiding roadside bombs, and dealing with rowdy militias, I can't see it being particularly exciting even if they do stretch it a bit like in the previous CoDs. So I'm guessing it's going to be mostly fictional, maybe somthing like Operation Flashpoint or Armed Assault's storyline? I guess they could do the Middle-East, the fictional part being their forces not surrendering/getting owned.

Considering that one of the Chapters in COD2 focused on the assault on Pointe-du-Hoc, which was an operation assigned to the Rangers, COD4 might focus on special operations. While the majority of standard infantry and combat units are given tasks such as patrolling and maintaining order in the Middle East, special units are still given direct combat assignments.
It might be interesting if they focus on what hasn't been touched yet...
During the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom Army Special Forces and the 75th Ranger Regmiment where given such tasks as...
Direct action operations
Raids
Infiltration and exfiltration by air, land or sea
Airfield seizure
Personnel seizure
Now that I think of it, the game might be interesting, just as long as they focus on what hasn't been touched by other developers.
Imagine a mission where you're given the task to clear an airfield. You infiltrate from the air in the middle of the night and regroup with your squad/platoon while under fire...
Blah blah, clear the airstrip of any vehicles/obstacles. Clear the Air tower and set up communications, clear the terminal, eliminate any enemy personnel, locate any intelligence, seize enemy commanding officer.
I don't know it seems like much of it has been covered in the past by other games but they can pull it off.

I don't think it would be that great really, as it is it would only be a couple of days of fighting a rabble of crippled, badly equipped soldiers who surrender half the time. Plus it's a slap in the face to the other nations who took part but got discluded, when CoD is known for it's usual inclusion of them.

You can only do some many World War 2 games before they get burnt out and people ignore them. It is a good thing they are moving on to other wars, WWII gets to much attention and becoming not so much fun any more.

Although maybe some FPS will be able to capture my attention. COD3 and GRAW2 just never interested me like COD2 and GRAW, its pointless. I need sleep.

For playing games I do yea, after all thats what it's ment to do. No ******ing about installing, looks better then PC (my PC anyway) and theres voice chat all the time. It's so much more easier then messing about in teamspeak and stuff, its just all there for you, just so convenient.
Elanzer
Apr 27 2007, 07:31 PM
I don't think its fair to label installation as a negative point, it's a one-time process that takes a few minutes and saves you having to suffer the sound of your DVD drive spinning up constantly during gameplay, and improves load times. The fact your PC isn't good enough is an invalid point, and quite a few games have inbuilt voice chat - no teamspeak messing, although it's true it is easier on the 360 at least, because nearly everyone has a mic. Other than that console versions of FPS and RTS games - the two most popular genres - have worse graphics, gameplay, and control schemes. Established and widely proven fact. I'm not saying consoles are bad, I love my 360, but overall if you compare the same game on both platforms, the PC version will come out ontop. That's pretty much the reason why I only buy console exclusives for those genres, all the other games are better played off-console.

Apr 28 2007, 06:04 PM
Judging by the trailer the game is fictional, it's not based off a real war. It doesn't even seem to be a war really, more of some kind of insurgency/flashpoint which is even less reason for multinational involvement. Besides, the SAS don't really have a uniform as such anyway so it's impossible to say for sure whether it was them or not, nowadays they're more often in standard British military clothing or plain clothes than the stereotypical black CT outfit you see in CS/pictures/that trailer. And seeming it makes no refrence to anything other than Americans vs. Russians and Arabs, I think it's safe to assume they (or anyone else) won't be included.
Crazy Asian
Apr 28 2007, 06:27 PM
Well, I was just guessing.
Wait...plain clothes?
Anyways, I do see your point, but Full Spectrum Warrior 2 was (and is) fictional and you play as Brits in that game.

If its going to be a "modern" game I hope it its a bit more realistic in terms action and how many people one individual is capable of shooting/killing/whatever. I never beat CoD2 because it was such an incredibly redundant and boring process of killing an entire German division to accomplish one worthless objective, like repairing a telephone wire.
Not to be a snob, but using the American forces as a central character/theme in these games are a given, since Americans are more than likely the primary market being targeted. I believe these companies and developers are more and more about making money than making a good game these days.

To this end, the developer ditched the campaign system seen in previous COD games and replaced it with two storylines - one from the viewpoint of an SAS trooper and one from a member of US elite fighting force Force Recon - that interweave during the course of the game and reach a climax in Russia.
But what is the story in CoD 4? Here's the deal. At the cornerstone of the plot lurks Zakhaev, a Russian ultra-nationalist with aims to bring the Soviet Union back into existence and in the style of his idol, Stalin. Zakhaev initiates civil war in the Mother Land and, aware that other world powers will attempt to intervene, hatches a trap to tie-down US forces in Middle Eastern country.
British intelligence, meanwhile, has been working with loyal Russians in tracking Zakhaev, and eventually manages to convince the US of the true reason for the Middle East conflict. Cue war, a war though which Infinity Ward explains it wants to take the player on a rollercoaster ride of conflict.
