Okay, there seems to be a bit of interest in this lately, best to keep the chatter in one place...

So first off, who intends on getting it?

Second, are you just getting it to mess around in, or are you interested in serious/online play?
Shaun
I'll be acquiring it to see if it'll run.
If all goes well I'll buy it for online play.
Scud.NOR
I'm mainly buying it for serious games.

There might be an occational, "lol imma do a kamikaze with this jet, brb"

But yeah, primeraly for "serious" online play tongue.gif

PS: people need mics. and we need a vent. would be so much more fun. (ingame comms in arma2 btw?)

Oh and btw. I'm not going to bother getting it from a store, because I wont be able to play any at all till Tuesday. So'ill be getting it from steam.
WolfXI
Same as Shaun. Elanzer, you need a mic. :<
Elanzer
You two'd be better off trying the demo. You do need a fairly beefy PC but as with ArmA1 the patches optimise a lot as they go. Also keep in mind performance isn't as important as it is with other games as not much time is spent actually shooting.

I do have a mic, and we will be requiring them, though it's not an absolute necessity. ArmA2 does have sufficient inbuilt voice communications. Protocol for it is pretty important in big games as there's numerous channels for numerous purposes to avoid clutter, but seeming we won't ever be more than a squad, or probably not even a fireteam, and realistically we will be playing by ourselves in coop missions, we won't have to worry about that too much.

This is pretty serious business so I need to start making plans for how I'm going to train you bastards.
The_Sorrow
I'll try out the demo today and if it runs well, probably buy it later today.
Elanzer
It's not out in retail until July 7th over there, though it's on steam right now.
Scud.NOR
Downloading the demo now tongue.gif
Shaun
SAAAAAME.
The_Sorrow
Oh, I'll just buy it on Steam then I guess.
Guns For Sale
fukthat i'm waiting till retail.

Anyway, i know people been talking about it being somewhat poorly optimized. Personally it ran great for me..but this guide will help you push it to the limit while keeping a good frame rate.

Shaun
I got 28fps at 720x450

GOD DAMN
Elanzer
Didn't see anything useful in that thread, there's no real big game tweaks right now. Also the configs settings are all available ingame, only reason to go in there is to check the autodetected GPU memory is correct.
Shaun
oh hurr never mind. I get the same sort of fps if I put the resolution up.
I don't understand.

I need a new graphics card to be able to aim in this basically.
Elanzer
It's a CPU-heavy game, but going from your specs it seems your GPU could use an upgrade.
Guns For Sale
Why would we need a vent...Arma has VOIP.
Elanzer
Yes.

I'm going to start sorting out a mission for us. Any ideas?
Guns For Sale
Want some flying missions.

Also i bought Arma 2 on steam =/

I did it because the area i'm in has a shit walmart and i doubt they would get Arma 2 on the release date..then the nearest gamestop or mall is about an hour away. And i don't feel like paying 20-30 dollars in gas to get a game.

Its downloading now, so im going to try and get my mic to fucking work.
Elanzer
Well a pure flying mission for all of us is pretty much out of the question... Some people have difficulty flying and it would be a bit silly. Save that kind of thing for single player or mass-coop/no teamwork servers.

We could perhaps have someone as a pilot that can ferry the squad to the various points we may need to get to, maybe light air support... but that kind of thing tends to be reserved for light vehicles, and if they crash or die, there's no more chopper.

I think until I can get a decent coop mission constructed and organise some proper training sessions we may have to stick with the stock arcadey scenarios, probably best to get people used to the game too.
Guns For Sale
fuck ill do it, i love flying. I'll be the taxi bitch

got my mic to finally work. THe mic is so shitty i had to go in to the fucking sound options on my computer set the vol to 100, and then set the boost to 10% otherwise you cant hear me lol. And i could have two npc gunners or something so i can provide light fire support with my choppa
Scud.NOR
Tried the demo for half an hour before I went to work.

Think it'll take a while before I get used enough to it to actually kill something.

Probably going to need a lot of Elanzers intense training sessions, rofl.
Guns For Sale
It isn't hard, you just have to take your time. This isn't a game where you can rush in and go rambo. I've been playing this first mission almost all night.
Crazy Asian
Tried the demo and my assumptions were right.

[03:54] Crazy Asian4096: 5 more minutes until arma II demo
[03:54] Crazy Asian4096: lol
[03:55] Jamoche: lol
[03:55] Crazy Asian4096: 5 more minutes to tell me "DUDE! SERIOUSLY! YOU'RE PC IS OLD AS HELL! YOU ARE IN DRASTIC NEED OF AN UPGRADE!"
Elanzer
First thing to say about performance is the game is much more CPU-heavy than GPU, and Vista / Windows 7 can hamper performance up to 30%.

Anyway, after a brief few mini games last night I'm making notes of possible roles for people...

Guns, you're fairly undisciplined and guilty of rambo'ing and subsequently dying a lot. You're going to have to change that as each time you die you'll take one of the 'team lives' away from someone who could've died genuinely doing something useful. A low-importance, fairly disposable role like a rifleman is a suitable for you currently, alternatively you could be a pilot or driver in larger ops so you're relatively out of harms way.

Sorrow I thought did really well for a newcomer, he hardly died and stayed in formation pretty well. Corpsman/medic perhaps?
Guns For Sale
It was 2 when we played, and i was a little antsy, i want to just play and kill some shit.

But yeah, i would love to be a pilot. Taxi people in and out, provide light support with my two door gunners.
Elanzer
Currently setting up a mission right now that should cater to our needs.

Brief synopsis: it'll be a dawn raid against a town where a Force Recon team (us) has to go behind enemy lines and take out key targets in preparation for the main assault by standard marine units.
WolfXI
You're really into this. ohmy.gif
Guns For Sale
It is really fun. If we get more people from csdl to get the game..we could maybe start a csdl tact sever.
Shaun
BAWWWWW MA PC :<
The_Sorrow
I could do some corpsman/medic. Looking forward to that mission too, seems like a good challenge.
Jamoche
Well im trying out the demo tonight, ill let you guys know how it goes ohmy.gif.
WolfXI
The demo raped me, even on low. :<

BAWWWW.
Guns For Sale
lolol
Jamoche
It runs okay on my machine, but i cant really play it because it crashes to desktop every 5 mins. RAEG
Langan Volkswagen
Played the demo for about 15 minutes. After being killed 6-7 times by someone I couldn't see I was about to rage quit. I turned my sound on, thinking it may or may not be an important piece of the game and halt my quick rage quit. I played until I heard the terrible voices for the radio and decided to stop. I'll probably try it later, seeing as you all seem to be into it. ohmy.gif
Elanzer
You played without sound on? Sigh...

I don't get why people keep saying the voices are terrible. Yes they sound robotic but that is because they are dynamically generated. They consist of various individual words and phrases that can be mixed together and used contextually and dynamically by the game - Instead of characters speaking a preset generic line of dialogue activated by simple triggers, like "There's enemies on our left!", they actually take the available data that they know and come up with their own sentence to fit the situation such as "machinegunner, rifleman, far to our left, 500 metres" which is far more useful even if it does sound blatantly synthetic. It also means I as a mission designer could make an NPC come out with a sentence that doesn't exist in the game, purely by typing what I want the character to say into a box... Impressive really.

Like I say, it's more of a simulator than a game, and so vast that it cant afford to have the small-scale polish of traditional FPS titles, it's got a much broader focus.
Langan Volkswagen
My hair was wet so I didn't have my headphones on.

You make a very good point about the radio commands. It sounds like they'll actually be useful, unlike the shitty radio chatter in most fps games.

Anyhow, I'll give the demo another try and give it a fair chance, as it does sound like it would be fun to get into.
WolfXI
Too bad you can't spam the radio like in css for lols. :<

Elanzer did type "I SEE SPY," and I lol'd.
Scud.NOR
Hmm, got the game and everything. Played some. And oh my....this is going to take some getting used to.

Think I might spend some time trying to master the helicopters. I used to be a beast in Battlefield vietnam, choppah rape.

Though so far I feel its a bit harder to fly in Arma2
Elanzer
Guns and Sorrow are still getting used to it so you're not alone. You should join us.
The_Sorrow
I can barely hover with a choppa. Even with auto-hover on.
Scud.NOR
Just give me a heads up on steam friends if you wanna do something on Arma anytime tongue.gif

I cant wait to learn this game properly. I think its going to be fucking epic once I know what I'm doing.
Scud.NOR
double gay
Guns For Sale
As elanzer said yeah. It a lot more fun when you take your time. And i'm the masta pilot.

I did a fucking flip when alec was in it. And i barely hit the ground, then bam i clipped the tree was i was gaining more alt. I just barely got over the tree lol.
Elanzer
Planning to play in about an hour or two whoever wants to come.
Scud.NOR
Fucking gay.

I finally found a good sniper position overlooking the valley. I looked all over for ages, but just couldnt see the enemies that had been killing us.

I finally found something that looked like a small group of commies, but I wasnt sure. I shot one of them. He didnt die. And the same seconds I took the shot
the radio called "check your fire check your fire". I assumed I had just shot a teammate so I hesitated. Then the russian bastard turned right towards me and killed me with 1 shot with his AK or whatever.
The_Sorrow
You guys really need to slow down and just take your time. I've noticed while Elanzer and I are crawling on the ground trying to sneak up on someone, you're a mile away or you're running up ahead and blowing our cover (Guns most of the time). I saw Scud do it today when I had to run about 500m to the West and heal you, which isn't the best thing for a corpsman to do.

I really want to do a nice stealth mission but it's becoming increasingly impossible because everyone wants to lolrambo. I'm going to see if Elanzer and I can create a good stealth mission that will require a bit of reconnoitering and sneaking around and not firing at the first guy you see. It'd be super if we did that.
Crazy Asian
I'd be down for it if I had a PC that could run it :c
WolfXI
MAN THE FUCK UP AND GET A NEW PC YOU WHINY LITTLE NIGGER.
