We're less than a week into the new year, and already some people are casting doubting glances at the industry. And by some people, we mean Lionhead's Peter Molyneux, who recently told the BBC that 2009's upcoming slate of game releases is "all looking a bit dry." The face behind our favorite game of 2008 also spoke out against current retail prices, predicting "a lot of price pressure put on games" in the future. Good thing, as we need to buy something to wash all of this down.

Noted Molyneux, "All the triple A titles came out this Christmas and while there is stuff in 2010 we can look forward to, off the top of my head I cannot think of anything next year that really excites me." Of the things that get him going, one is likely to be his next "super secret" project, a game that he teased "might" be revealed next year. Dmitri, is that you?

Peter Molyneux is dumb as fuck, hes a mediocre game designer at best. I think after CES we will have a better perspective of
what games are actually coming out.
RE5 is one i am pretty hyped about and also Mass effect 2( hopefully will be confirmed at CES) and bioshock 2(Hopefully announced at CES as well) and also Final Fantasy 13(which will blow that piece of shit fable 2 outta the water)
and also Call of Duty Modern 2. theres a few i am hyped about.
Peter Molyneux is dry, done and time to retire you old ass fuck /rage

so what games are you looking forward to this year or do you agree with that cockstain????
Elanzer
D'aww, he's not so bad. I think the problem is he gave up actually working on games himself a long time ago, even when I met him on several occasions back in the early 00's when Lionhead was in its infancy his input seemed fairly minimal, he was even hyping up ideas internally and ditching them because they were delusional, too. A taste of things to come I guess.

Anyway, for 360 at least there's a whole bunch games, like you mentioned. Until I get release dates I'm holding off getting excited about them myself (Mass Effect 2 for example, a little birdy tells me the story hasn't been nailed down yet), but for sure it's far from dry.

PC will be quiet though, there's only 2 games I'm looking forward to that I can think of - DoW2 and Empire:TW. The rest is just updates/DLC.
skyfire
i agree with the pc games, one hopeful will be if HL2: episode 3 is released(fingers crossed).
I think he thinks he's better then he is, at least that's what i gather after reading shit he says.
Shaun
Black mesa source is all i have to look forward to, and that's not even a proper game.

Just learned about prototype <---Clickit recently. While skeptical as always it looks like it could be fun. The upcoming batman (arkham asylum) game looks like a decent rental, as well as Brutal Legend because I've been looking forward to it for a while now. And of course the usual plethora of sequels to established quality IPs.

Final Fantasy 13

I did some research and I still don't understand the hype for this series. I understand that I am setting myself up for a debate I cannot possibly win because I am weak willed but I pose the question still.

prototype does look good
i grew up playing FF games since the first one came out for the nes, love them. A ff rpg last anywhere from 20 hrs to 60 hrs of gameplay.
the stories are intriguing and huge(not like fable).

What's with everyone bumraping parkour lately...

Because Prototype is ripping off ass creed a bit with the hooded main character/doesn't know about his past+parkour silliness. But it still looks like it might be fun.
Elanzer
Sounds like an old game called Messiah, where you were a Cherub that possesses people as part of the gameplay.

Except that game was actually pretty good.

Here is another game I have found while reading about games. Described as the Russian bioshock, looks like it could have potential but also whiffs a bit of fail.
Already out in russia, rest of the world waits till February

From the recent media and excessive hype I'm quite looking forward to Killzone 2 in feb, I was considering whether or not to mention it seeing as you could count the PS3 owners on one hand that frequent here but I'm looking forward to it anyway. This also surprised me.
KingTut
I watched the intro movie to killzone 2 and the 1st cinematic + about 45 seconds of gameplay. It looks like a standard entertaining shooter. However I found the dialogue a bit trite in the cinematics, but most people don't play a game named killzone for the storyline. You can probably find the link yourself if you are interested but feel free to request it if you can't be bothered. It will probably ruin the fresh new game smell that you may or may not value.
Elanzer
KZ2 is probably the best shooter exclusive to the PS3... but that's not saying much. The graphics are pretty good (but still fall short of what was promised, and aren't really much better than equivalent games on other formats) but the gameplay is distinctly average.
KingTut
Considering you have never played the game unless you preordered it (hurrrr hurr hurr), unless that "deal" is American exclusive you are only going on videos. This is roughly the equal of say, halo 3 just about 2 years later. If that's what you mean by average then I would agree.
Graphics are nice but to me they don't mean a whole lot so if you want to argue that case please don't.

Oh and Prototype is getting the comic treatment at 4 USD a comic. Effective way of hype? I reckon it should of gone the Dead space route and been free and less flashy.
Cut away most of the hype to try and get plot details from the press release:

PROTOTYPE puts gamers in control of Alex Mercer - a genetically mutated shape-shifter with no memory of his past, hell-bent on solving the mystery of his existence - as he tears through a densely populated New York City moving with Parkour-style fluidity and consuming anybody that gets in his way...assuming their physical identity, memories and abilities. Fueled by a three-way war between Alex, the military's elite Blackwatch division and a viral outbreak known as the Infected, players will venture deep into a dark conspiracy, 40 years in the making.

PROTOTYPE delivers a fresh take on open-world games, with key features separating the game from the rest of the pack, including the anti-hero main character Alex Mercer and his deadly shape-shifting abilities, a stunning representation of New York City circa 2008 as the backdrop, and 'Deceive or Destroy' gameplay allowing players the choice to either blend in with the population or fully unleash Alex's deadly powers. With Radical Entertainment behind the wheel using their innovative 'Titanium' game engine, and touting a catalogue of successful titles including the highly acclaimed The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, Simpsons Hit & Run and others, PROTOTYPE is aligned to be the ground-breaking open-world/action experience gamers have been waiting for.

PROTOTYPE is planned to release this autumn for next-gen console systems and the PC,
Elanzer
Played the beta on a friends PS3, heard from others who have played it at events.

The graphics do look great at first glance or in videos, but on-screen you quickly notice it's only a handful of little tricks that keep it from looking quite average. They're certainly good, but not as good as they are being portrayed by Sony's hype machine (I don't blame them, if this game flops they're fucked). If the gameplay had kept up it'd have a lot going for it, but it doesn't unfortunately so I still say it's afairly average and linear run-off-the-mill-explosive-barrel-shooter with good visuals and the addition of an interesting but unnecessary cover system.
skyfire
KZ3 is one of the few exclusives i wouldn't mind playing, the graphics aren't that bad but the gameplay is somewhat fun.
here's one that is starting to peek my interest, I am alive. the game looks like somehting i could get into altho
they say in this game that ammo will be scarce.
KingTut
Looks promising. But gameplay when available would be appreciated.
skyfire
yea it does look promising but no gameplay shots yet, from what i have read tho that it will be a first person view
but it might not really be an open world type of game, more linear from what i have heard but we will see when
more info and footage is released. Its classified as a survival horror game.
Rifleman
There has been some gameplay footage released, the game look has also changed quite a bit since the MP Beta, in regards to the visuals. I wouldn't blame anyone for not knowing though, Sony don't seem to be able to advertise their products properly, look at LBP which is a good game by anyone's account yet it's had mediocre sales, mainly down to the failure by Sony to properly market it. This is also one of the games that could do a Collectors Edition justice somewhat, it'd certainly make it look like Sony cared about KZ2, which they should do because it could sell consoles if done right. Unfortunately when has Sony ever done something right and when poor \ average games like DMC4 get a CE then it seems a bit shitty that this won't.

GIF time.

Elanzer
Those gifs are a good demonstration of what I was saying about the visuals, it's only the smart application of blur, DOF, and particle effects that makes it, as the base visuals are pretty bland, just look at the textures. That second gif is messed up too, look at the delay with the bloodsplat on the floor, and the muzzle flash is out in the middle of nowhere. Needs fixing.
Rifleman
It doesn't really matter how it gets to look they way it does, I agree on the muzzle flash and blood though.
Elanzer
Of course not, but when there's fools saying it's the best looking game out at the moment it's important to point out that the flashy visuals are only skin-deep. When it's on your own screen and you're interacting with the game world up-close it's not half as amazing as it looks from afar in videos online. The same applies to games like Gears 2, great from afar but when you take a closer look it's pretty standard.
KingTut
No-one on this site was saying that.... unless you were trying to dispel the freewheeling internet hype machine.
Rifleman
If you visit other gaming forums you'll find quite a few people getting a bit carried away.
Elanzer
I was, out in the wild some people are hailing it as as a 360 killer. I was just saying while it's visuals are good they aren't a miraculous step forward, and that the gameplay may just about manage to be a Halo 3 killer at a stretch, for single player at least.
skyfire
xbox killer, no, halo killer please please beat halo so halo fanboys can shut the fuck up.
KingTut
Well considering the 1st killzone was hailed as the halo killer and turned out to be a decent but not too inspiring shooter I doubted the sequel would do the same. But it wouldn't be hard to beat halo 3's single player. But then all a game needs to do to equal it is to have a solid campaign. Not necessarily a quality one.

Got one thats release date is far enough not to warrant a official thread

Dark Void : Game wiki page here http://www.giantbomb.com/dark-void/61-20703/

Gears of War knock-off with some interesting twists that make it different enough not be be sued for copyright. Looks like a solid enough concept if a slightly wacky story. Release is slated for Q4 2009.

I highly doubt they would get sued for anything like that.

I don't know if any of you played it but the first real duck and cover system (Along with dive, roll ect similar to gow) was Kill Switch for the xbox. It came out years before the 360 did, but no one gives it credit for being a pretty cool game.
KingTut
I was exaggerating about the sued part. But good to know that GoW isn't the first to use the cover idea, was it the first to use the single button layout for it though (not saying that Dark Void is going to be like this)?
The_Sorrow
Fuck yeah Kill Switch. I fucking loved that game so much. Awesome cover system for its time and an awesome game.

I've played every "next-gen" first person shooter on consoles and nothing comes close to what the Killzone 2 public beta offered. Halo 3, Resistance 2, and CoD 4 are shit compared to KZ2. The real next-gen begins 2/27/09. I'm a hardcore PC gamer and not so much into consoles, but damn, KZ2 is something I'm really excited about.

It has a 93 so far based off 40 reviews on metacritic. It's also based off an earlier version of the game, not the retail version.

Good news for PC gamers :BF1943 and BF bad company 2 are being released for PC Q3 &Q4 2009.

though BF1943 is going to be mp only ,meaning no bot support ,at least at the beginning.

BF Bad company 2 is the full fledged BF3 we've been waiting for ,I think , (or at least I hope so).

Booth games are using the frostbite engine ,so the quality can't be too bad .

Really? 'Cause to me it looks like a standard FPS, nothing groundbreaking. That's not to say it won't be good.

I think it's been said before - It's pretty (even though the prettiest scenes are pre-rendered), but the gameplay is nothing special.

According to meta, as you'd expect with such a hyped game critic reviews are 9 and above, but user reviews are around a 7.

To each his own, but it's definitely the best FPS I've played on any console.
WolfXI
A game that I've been watching for the last little bit is Metro 2033, which is due for sometime in 2009. Apparently it's made by some of the same team that made STALKER, but hopefully not based upon the same engine. Looks neat.

Agreed wolf, it looks really neat.

[EDIT]

As to Skyfire's MP in Bioshock 2 comment; though I have yet to really play Bioshock for more than an hour, it seems to me like one reason it keeps its atmosphere and genuine feel so well is because it's not plagued by an overly pushy multiplayer system that would whore out all of its character models and reduce the value of the story. Don't get my wrong, I like a good multiplayer game but it seems to me that Bioshock did something right by focusing completely on the singleplayer aspect of the game. I hope they do the same for Bioshock 2.
skyfire
yea, i'm weary of mp too. the atmosphere doesn't really suit it but then again who knows where bioshock 2 will take us

Before reading the rest of the article, I replayed the demo just now to see if that whole midget part was true. It took me some time to hunt down a character at a flat area since the areas of the mission are not so level. I managed to do a fair comparison with 4 characters. Rico and one of the other guys seemed taller, but not drastically taller as the article seems to imply. The other two guys were a little bit shorter than the main character. Just like in real life, people do differ in height. So that whole midget paragraph is false and absolute bullshit.

I can't comment on the train part since I never played it, but the environments are still very interesting to look at, and other reviewers such as IGN seem to agree with me. Other than that, the article really isn't saying much. There's nothing about the gameplay and that's the part I like the most about Killzone 2. It's why I enjoy it more than any other console FPS.
KingTut
Fair enough, not having played the game I just wanted to see someone who loved the game like you do justify their love against someone who played the whole thing. I wasn't trying to attack you.

reviewers such as IGN

IGN over hypes in their reviews/previews. Sometimes they will hype up a preview and then when they finally review the game...they give it horrible scores. I hate IGN when it comes to reviews.
WolfXI
I've learned not to base my opinion of a game or buy a game based upon reviews from a review site. Ever. Demos/trials/betas/playing it at your friends house is how I do it.
Rifleman
From the demo of KZ2 I'm glad I pre-ordered it, it's probably the most immersed in a game I've been when playing through it without the hud and it certainly has graphics to compete with the best of them but the controls are extremely Marmite and take a bit of time until they really click with you. It can't help if you don't like the PS controllers (never had a problem myself) though most people with a PS3 can't mind too much. I think a problem some people are having with the acceleration in it is that they're trying to play it like CoD 4 when it's not a twitch shooter. It has great audio as well if the demo is anything to go off.
Crazy Asian
My problem with Killzone for the PS2 was that looking/aiming was either too sensitive or not sensitive enough.
Rifleman
Well it certainly isn't sensitive.
