I loved the previous Prince of Persia remakes (excluding the third one), but this new remake is bugging me.
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/42673.htmlNot to say this new one will be a bad game (some would even say it looks good), but couldn't they've just named it something different? It bears no resemblance to Prince of Persia, it looks more like Final Fantasy raped Walt Disney and 9 months later he shat out this hybrid.
Just wanted to moan. Guess this thread can stay around in case anyone plays it and wants to share their thoughts.

Oh yay, another fuck up from ubisoft. They screwed Far Cry up they ass and now they've gone and cut the Princes dick off, what a fantastic year for sequels this has been. And not to troll, that's just what i think about how they have handled their last couple of releases.

Well, they did make the remakes which almost everyone enjoyed. This looks terrible but I have a feeling it plays alright. Did anyone think of the Sands of Time when watching the trailer. Replace hourglass with a tree.

Well, while the environments seem impressive they look (judging from review videos) linear and the single enemy is going back to the roots of the POP (not really a good thing). Its growing on me but there are some key design decisions which has put me off it.
Prince of Persia commentary inbound.
One big thing that surprises me is that people praise sands of time over its sequels. While sands of time had arguebly the best execution of the three games it had the game down to a formula. Advance through traps, kill a bunch of sand ghouls and then save. I loved the game but after the trap segments ended I felt a bit bored fighting off waves of ghoulies. The way that the 3rd one (skipped the second because i couldn't find it anywhere) mixed things up was much appreciated. But the third one changed the feel of the game and while still a good game made the prince of persia feeling lose its charm.
Prince of persia 3D is the most "fun" out of the 3 POP titles I own. Sands of time is the "best game" out of the lot and the Two Thrones was the most "average" out of the lot. All three were good games in my point of view. The third had its faults (preventing me from ever getting round to killing the final boss because i couldn't be arsed) but the mid game was pretty strong. In reflection I feel POP is one of gamings best series and this new title seems to be geared more to the "casual" gamer or POP inductees. I look forward to next installments in this new line (if it is to be a new line) because, I'm saying it here first, Ubisoft is not the game wrecking company that everyone makes it out to be.
Edit: Just to make sure it doesn't look like I'm all for this game I would like to point out that I still do not like this incarnation as the main gameplay decisions in the context of the previous titles of the series but I am warming up to the style of the game (its ugly and like a cartoon but if i see enough of it and its landscapes I might forget that there was a time five years ago when I though that the Sands of time was the most visually impressive game I had seen) and if they truly make this game more open-world and not a AC clone but a good game in its own right I will retract my prophecies of doom and gloom and accept it all for what it is.

You missed out by not playing Warrior Within, although it was quite angsty and metally it had a good plot with loads of twists and turns, multiple endings etc. and the action was improved too. If you ask me the third one, can't even remember its name, was the worst.
Oh and it's nothing like Assassin's Creed so don't worry about that.
Edit: After watching
this video review I don't think I'll even bother trying it. Just look at some of the cutscene clips, I know I mentioned Disney before but ffs it's cringeworthy. Childish 12 year old American kid humour does not a Prince of Persia make.

Bump. Little article that sums up exactly how I feel.
QUOTE
What are we to make of a “Prince of Persia” who talks and behaves like a 17-year-old American mall rat? A “Prince of Persia” with blue eyes, fully Anglicized facial features and what looks like a tan he picked up on spring break? Is it taking a video game too seriously to shrink in distaste from such characterizations? In fairness, the new Prince of Persia does not claim any historical or cultural authenticity; the game is set in a fantastic magical realm rather than in a rendition of any real place. But does that absolve the game of any responsibility?
I think not. I played the original Prince of Persia in 1990, and at the time I did not really know how to express my unease. One year later I read the seminal work of the scholar Edward Said, “Orientalism.” A controversial and influential academic figure, Mr. Said contended that the West had spent centuries romanticizing and fetishizing the cultures and peoples of Islam as a tool of the West’s own political and military hegemony.
At the time I did not think my professors would appreciate a look at Mr. Said’s work through the prism of a video game. But perhaps I underestimated them. Perhaps they would have understood that even in the latest, most modern new media, the cultural vocabulary accumulated over the course of history makes its presence felt at almost every turn.
Many Americans have little understanding of the difference between Persia and the Arab world. To most Americans the entire Islamic world is still the “other,” as Mr. Said might have put it, something mysterious and unknowable and at least a bit menacing.
Prince of Persia does not try to grapple with these issues. But by mere fact of its name and Middle Eastern trappings, the game invokes and raises them. Yes, there is danger and potential futility in taking works of mass fare too seriously. Yet there is also danger in employing cultural symbols of such power so blithely, with such a willful disregard for reality.
Prince of Persia is a great game, but simply being a video game is no longer sufficient to earn a pass from being held to account for shaping the perceptions and attitudes of its players. Not anymore.

Well, the fact that the prince is a dressed up American has been fairly constant through the series. You don't really think a western company is going to make an Arab figure the hero, look at Altair/Denis. An American in the holy land etc. Well, that was a bit general but for the most part the games speak for themselves.

I don't think the Prince has ever been American before, apart from (I think?) the 3rd in the Sands of Time trilogy which was pretty shit anyway. And even then, although they left a little to be desired with the Prince's genetics, at least it did itself some favours by (almost entirely) excluding American accents, setting it in the real world (albeit fantastical), and having a Persian aesthetic, as stereotypical as it may have been.
Assassin's Creed was done really well in retrospect. All the cities were based off genuine locations, the time period was real, and people spoke as authentically as possible without omitting English entirely and relying on subtitles. It used to bother me he looked/sounded American but then I played the game and it made it pretty clear the reason for it is he's still who he is in the Animus (American Desmond from the future), just acting out the ancestor's memories himself via VR. If the actual Altair was seen at any point in the game and was like that, then it'd be a problem, but he's not, it's just Desmond following his footsteps.
Whereas in the new Prince of Persia no time frame or location is given at all, not even hinted at in the architecture or aesthetics, and they're all American. Infact, I don't think there's anything to even suggest he's a Prince, he's just a vagrant with a giant metal claw and a donkey.

Well the Prince has always had a American voice actor (iirc) I know he did for 3D, and I think for all of the Ubisoft original trilogy. You had farah and that was well done, but as to the Prince himself I didn't think he looked very Persian/Middle Eastern.
The fact that it was Denis was not very well explained. I had a different interpretation of the game but your interpretation makes more sense now, and is likely the correct one.
If you are talking about the environments then I would agree with you. All the previous games had a Persian feel to them whereas this new one is a fantasy land that kept the original IP's title.

His interpretation is definitely the correct one haha. I played the game a bit at a game store here in Holland. It's fun but I can see why you guys find the Americanized hero annoying. He seems like a California boy dressed up as a belly dancer performing all sorts of acrobatic feats. I'm not all that bother about the inaccurate historical representation as it's just a game and realism is definitely not where the devs meant to put the emphasis, but the way I felt I was playing a frat boy the whole time really got under my skin.

In SoT it definitely wasn't, I think in WW it started to turn into a bit of a hybrid and go bad.

When it eschews everything implied in the title and for what fans of the series love it for, yes.
You might as well have a Guitar Hero 5, where you play a magical saxophone to the tune of a 50's jazz soundtrack.

I got the game about ,ahh....when it first came out . and while I didn't finish the game my self (I only played an hour or so myself) ,I watched my brother finishing it .
And I must say it looks gorgeous ,I hated the last prince ,but this one diffidently gets my vote.
lets get to details:
PROS:
The graphics are more than OK ,game play is wonderful ,I love the new single engagement system ;it almost looks like a movie when you fight an enemy, and with a wide range of combos as always.
The chatting system is good ,and certainly add up to the story telling ability .
also the new prince is a lot more appealing to me than the old prince.
A sad yet a very creative ending of the story ,that tells the beginning of a sequel .
finally the story is compelling enough .
CONS:
The game is not that difficult since you can't die.
there isn't really that many enemies around to fight ,so it lacks the action sometimes .
you always fight only one enemy at the time.
overall:
I didn't play sands of time and the warrior within ,but played two thrones and hated it.
and this one seems like at least ten times better.

I'm currently replaying Sands of Time when I am not in the mood for Silent Hill 2 (the game I am currently playing srsly) and when I want easy fun I go back to ma gamecube and pop in that. Think of it as The Two Thrones without the fail. Slightly more repetitive but a better quality game overall.
By easy fun I mean receiving fun easily not that the game is overly easy at all.

Just read the upcoming film's synopsis
Dastan (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a 6th century prince of Persia who teams up with Princess Tamina (Gemma Arterton) to rescue the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that controls time, from the hands of the villainous nobleman, Nizam (Ben Kingsley).

I'm always perplexed why films cannot make greater use of the already developed IP to the full extent.
