Im probably getting myself a new computer. Its been 6 months, not that long but i need to get up to date with the latest games.
It doesnt even matter that my current pc can run the most games without any problems. But my dad said im getting this as a christmas gift. I'll show you the specs. Please excuse me of misunderstanding cause i have to translate the whole specs from french into english.
Intel Core 2 Quad processor Q9650
Frequency 3.0Ghz
FSB : 1333Mhz
L2 cache : 12MB
Vista Home Premium (NL/FR/UK) 64 Bit SP1
Liquid cooling + Fan
Memory : 4Gb 1066Mhz DDR3
2x NVIDIA9800GTX
Graphics card memory : 2x 512Mo
HDD : 1,2 Tb (2x 640Gb)
Rapter Disk : 1x150Gb (10Krpm) WD-Raptor
Blue-Ray Disc & DVD +/-RW 16x Super Multiplus Double Layer
OR , ladies & gentlemen. He told me he would order me an Alienware Area 51 ALX.
Yes i know it'll be much cheaper if i configured my own pc. But that option doesnt matter this time.
Im getting an already configured pc. And at home i have some extra parts wich are some GC's and extra memory.

Well, seeming you're aware of the whole premade/custom thing but are happy going ahead with premade anyway... No issues from me.

It's not that amazing... Standard upper/high end, only notable thing really is the dual 9800GTXs, but even they're old stuff seeming they're just deceptively rebranded Geforce 8 tech. Latest generation 4870s or GTX280s would leave them in the dust.

I even never heard about Donchano. Giving away my old rig. Nah my dad is getting my current pc when i get that new computer.
I pay 2999.00€ for that pc. Their also is a Logitech gaming mouse & keyboard included. And i want to be sure i can run GTA IV without any laggy problems. I think that the rig i posted will be my choice. Maybe later a bit self configuring at home.

2x4870's in crossfire on an x48 board would be a lot better then 2 9800's, but then things start getting a bit expensive

Going to ask in here because new topic would be a bit silly.
So is it better to get a desktop that you can upgrade manually but if your moving around (I) will get left behind after 1-2 years?
Or buy a laptop that can play all of the games I want to play (DOW 2, Empire TW, STALKER etc., can a laptop even run crisis smoothly?) and be able to take it with me after 1-2 when it will probably be obsolete anyway?
Not to mention I would want to be able to play 1996-onwards games on it as well. However I am willing to sacrifice this if it means I can manage the above with out any framerate issues or other play hampering performance issues.

Depending on how much you want to pay for your computer, a laptop will be able to play whatever you want it to but will be largely more expensive than a desktop with equal power. I would say for you, go with desktop. It's much cheaper and like you said, the technology in your massively expensive laptop will be obsolete by the time you move anyway, which means you could probably just go out and build another desktop without too much hassle. If you really wanted to you could talk your old desktop parts with you, I guess.

Yes. 8xxx series (9xxx series) cards are elderly.
Get one of the new ones. (GTX 2xx, Radeon 4xxx, etc.)

Are you sure those 9800-Series arent that good anymore?
Its only for running GTA IV properly and etc.
So i should afford me a Radeon 4-seres ? What about that Sapphire 4870 ?
Would you give me some names about some great GCs?
Because lately im outdated about the latest hardware. I aint got thàt time much

Geforce 9 series is just a refreshed version of the Geforce 8 series, it really didn't deserve the title that suggested they were new.
The two top cards of the latest generation are the Radeon 4870X2 and GTX280.
Can you buy me one for Christmas, please?

Even though it's a relatively minor upgrade I'd gladly do it.
