My microphone is dying and has poor sound recording. What are the brands to look out for for a cost effective small (preferably mounted on a headset) microphone that I can plug-and-play into my PC?

Not like it really matters, anything will do. Just pick up something in the 10-20$ range from your local electronics store.

Hahaha, sweetwater is good stuff, we use them at school sometimes.
Tut, go to radioshack and pick up a headset. It will be cheap and it will work.

They do. And in all honesty it's the best we can get over here. It's easier to get a bumpin stereo/speaker setup than a good pair of gaming headphones.
