By the way, since we never had a topic on the Russia/Georgia conflict, I'd like to state right off that I was on Russia's side for that conflict.

To sum up in a political cartoon:

Not surprised you're on Russia's side.

I'm pretty impartial to be honest.

I was more inclined toward Russia too.

That comic summed it up, I remember seeing Georgia's president on the TV whining "BUT BUT BUT HELP PLEASE AMERICA, EU, COME SAVE US WE'RE ONLY LITTLE THIS ISN'T FAIR"

Then don't piss off your already grumpy ex-superpower neighbour.

As for that Putin thing I saw it on the news, it's a load of bullshit, he was practically on a Safari.

What I think is the most interesting part is that the Georgian Army was trained by the US Military for over 4 years. These guys were supposedly as good as American Army Regulars and some were even trained by our Special Forces. They weren't pushovers in the least.

Lo and behold, Russia steamrolled them like they weren't even there...

Funny too because the American Military trainers left just a few weeks before the Georgian Military started bombing and bombarding South Ossetia and ethnically cleansing the Russian population there. Makes you wonder, did the Georgian troops do this thinking they had the support of the American Military, or did Mikheil Saakashvili (a New York Lawyer) just feel like using his troops newly acquired knowledge to subdue a good portion of his population thinking his Northern neighbor would just look the other way while their people died?

(For those of you who didn't know: South Ossetia is a part of Northern Georgia, but is inhabited by, and always has been inhabited by people of Russian descent who wished to be part of Russia. Russian peacekeepers were in place there to ensure the safety of not only the Ossetians, but also of the Georgians. In the first night of bombing and shelling over 2000 civilians had been killed by the Georgian onslaught, and that's when Russia got involved.)

Another thing is that somebody who was actually there, tried telling the truth on Fox News, but was cut off immediately. Not only that, but nobody questioned why she ran to Russia and why the Russians saved her and not the Georgians. Link <--- Clicky

P.S. El, I think with this little demonstration it's pretty clear that Russia is no longer an ex-superpower. Their military just wiped the floor with (as I mentioned) U.S. trained soldiers using equivalent or better weaponry who had the advantage of being on the defense. That's just my observation though.

Also, just so I don't hijack completely with the Russia/Georgia thing, Putin was a member of the KGB... I wouldn't discount his ability to have been able to wrestle the tiger into submission let alone have good reaction time and shoot it with a tranq gun. Then again they may just be giving Putin credit for somebody elses deed just to make him look more bad ass.

Eh, the ex-superpower remark wasn't meant to imply they were by any means weak, quite the opposite, that they have the power and they're spoiling for a scrap to claw their status back. They would've wiped the floor with Georgia no matter what they had, or whoever went to help. I'd imagine incidents like this conflict only serve to strengthen the Russian military further as well.

I saw the actual video of that Putin thing, it's pretty much just propaganda. Nowhere near as dramatic as reported, he even has time for an assistant to come and ready his weapon for him before he takes the actual shot, which is conveniently cut out.

Also that video... How is Fox news still on the air?
spaghettifier
fox news is still on the air because people still don't question it's bullshit, if you really want to laugh look at it's video about anonymous, they say things like "we have discovered their secret site" "they do it for the 'luls' a corruption of the internet slang lol" really funny
Here
Also i saw a comment somewhere saying
"do they know what a fox is, because they sure as hell don't know the second word in their name"
DonutGuard
People do question their bullshit, but those opinions are almost never heard because it never makes it through the filter of mainstream media.

Unless of course you consider Keith Olbermann. But even he only really criticizes Bill O'Reilly for the most part, which is only a small part of the whole.

Like I mentioned in another thread there was a video on google a while back that showed a lot of the ways that American media (particularly Fox) spins the news to make them tell a completely different stories than what is really happening. Specifically, it focuses on the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land. If Israelis are attacked or killed, they spin the story to make it seem like a "quiet neighborhood in Israel" is being besieged by radical Islamic terrorists hell-bent on killing Jews when really the land they're being killed on is Militarily occupied by Israel and is being settled by Israeli civilians in order to unofficially annex/colonize the area in the same manner that Americans settled Native American territories in the Mid-Western United States in the early-mid 1800's.

Even in the UN the United States' unwavering support of Israel of their occupation and even treatment of the Palestinian is obvious. When the UN wants to investigate Israel for unethical treatment of Palestinians or even into their genocide the US vetoes it.
Short video on YouTube that explains why many people worldwide hate the United States, in the video it includes an outline of the UN resolutions vetoed by the United States favoring Israel. <-- Link (It's hard to read at points but it gets the point across)

Peace, Propaganda and the Promised Land: Media & the Israel-Palestine Conflict <-- Link to the Google Video site... warning it's an hour and twenty minutes long so if you have a short attention span don't bother.

Shockingly, I too have sided with the Russians since they were defending themselves and the media is obviously slanting against them and blowing the entire conflict out of proportion.

I think the whole Georgian issue is a domestic Soviet one left over from the Cold War, and at the time the Russians were simply unable to settle it. The United States and western European countries have since the end of the Cold War, despite differences between those nations at the time, continued a policy of containment (sorry it might be a bad word to use given the context of discussion) against Russia through arms reduction and most notably, having former Soviet Bloc countries join the EU and NATO. Its no wonder the Russians are upset and flexing muscle, the West has been encroaching on what Russia considers their backyard for the last 17 years.

The Georgians got steamrolled because they were outrageously outnumbered, over 600,000 Russian troops poured into the country. No amount of training could stem such numbers. Saakashvili is an idiot for doing what he did, trying to start ethnic cleansing and losing a war then relying on the media to try and skew things to his country's advantage.

i love the russian military tactic, since long before WW1 they just flood the opposition with ridiculous numbers of less well trained soldiers, putting quatity way above quality. they prove that action movies are full of shit with their illogical underdog wins
Elanzer
I wouldn't say they're badly trained really.
Santana Claws
I don't know what their training standards are today, but during the Cold War the Soviets' military training was up to par with western nations if not better, especially in armored and aerial combat. They rely moreso on actual basic training (gunnery for example), as opposed to relying on computers and satellites to do it for them (they can't afford it), though they do have such hardware in limited quantities. I'm sure they still consider the United States as their "main" threat and prepare themselves to the best of their current abilities. Its a typical household tactic for the Russians to "zerg" with armor and infantry, its not as much of a strain on their resources to do so.
