HP's revelation, made at the launch of a new range of business notebooks, flies in the face of Microsoft's persistent PR claims that Vista has sold tens of millions of copies — and is selling at a faster rate than XP ever did.

However, HP explained how Microsoft is coming up with these "Vista" sales figures.

"From the 30th of June, we have no longer been able to ship a PC with a XP licence," said Jane Bradburn, Market Development Manager, Commercial Notebooks for HP Australia.

"However, what we have been able to do with Microsoft is ship PCs with a Vista Business licence but with XP pre-loaded. That is still the majority of business computers we are selling today."

So, in other words, Microsoft counts a sale for Vista, even though the computer manufacturer has really sold XP.

Rob Kingston, Group Manager of Commercial Product Marketing for HP said, "Looking into the crystal ball, I don't think businesses will see much value in upgrading to Vista until late next year, and even so, Microsoft will probably have come out with something else by then."

HP's revelation casts doubt over Microsoft's claims about how many copies of Vista have been sold, as HP has made clear that although a sale may be counted as 'Vista', it may actually be XP.

Microsoft has told HP it will no longer be able to do this after January 2009, but HP's Jerel Chong, Market Development Manager, Commercial Notebooks, said the number one PC maker was already in discussions with Microsoft about how it could push this deadline back.

tl;dr vista is shit for all you lazy fellows.
Rifleman
Nothing wrong with it.
ninedice
i enjoy it, even if i have to reinstall it every few months
and hassle with drivers
and mess with incompatible programs
its sooo pretty smile.gif
Rifleman
You shouldn't need to do that, there's obviously something wrong with your setup, are you using SP1?
ninedice
yea, and i think its because i cheaped out on some hardware, and like to f* around with everything i can, that and some of the programs i use are questionable at best

I have an HP with Vista Home Premium 64-bit.
And guess what? No problems! ohmy.gif

SP1 hasn't had any problems with me, actually even less then the base as far as compatibility goes. Sometimes i wonder what problems i could avoid by using XP, but then i look at whats so much better once you tweak it just right, and it makes it worth while

What El posted isn't saying Vista sucks, it's just saying that Microsoft is trying to make it look better than it actually is.

With SP 2 and other updates coming up, along with the reports from the only users I know... eg: you guys. It seems to me that Vista isn't terrible, XP is just noticeably better. Does that satisfy people?

Problem with Vista is first impressions are vital and it cocked up royally, thus will continue to be shunned by the majority until it dies. In truth although it still suffers from annoyances, incompatibilities, and bugs, it's not as bad as it used to be... But unfortunately that's not good enough. Why drop a perfectly functional OS like XP for one with no benefits and a potential risk of problems?
Rifleman
It does have a lot of benefits if you know bout them.

I'd learn to customize/use it if I weren't so lazy.

I have a basic implementation of Linux built into my motherboard that lets me use the internets and email without booting Windows/all devices. It's handy being able to check stuff within 5 seconds of pressing the on switch.

windows 98SE ftw

Dear god i remember when i had to use that for a month, because my hard drive died and all i had was a dusty 4 gig one spare sad.gif
Playing MDK2 with no sound, and no internet because it didn't support my modem drivers. So basically all i had to play with was the stupid themes, which were all equally annoying with their stupid icons and mouse pointers.

Eh. Vista is awesome for most users and even slightly more than average, but past that it's like trying to beat up foam. It just won't do of unless you know the secrets. Vista is actually awesome IMO, but unless you learn the secrets to controlling it you're screwed tongue.gif
