Full Version: Skin cocked up my game

I did everything the tut told me, I read all the Faqs, and I also went on youtube as a last resort for detailed instructions. All 3 sources told me to just "Drag and Drop" the materials, models, sounds, and script into the "cstrike" directory. So I did exactly as I was told and moved all 4 folders of my AK mod into the directory, and chose to write over all of the files. When I tried to run the game, guess what happened? It crashed and slapped me with an error message saying something about "invalid client .dll".
Someone PLEASE either write detailed instructions about how to install mods with Vista or post up a link that actually helps.

2. do you have winrar?

3. Is it a legal copy of the game

4. Which skin is this and where did it come from
DaBreadBoi
1. I already did, and it works fine. But CS is getting really boring without mods.

2. Yes

3. Legal, but does it even matter? Still the same "cstrike" folders and such, right?

4. I don't remember what it's called, but it's the first and highest rated AK mod here.

There's absolutely no way for a skin to break the game, none of the games files are modified in any shape or form, and even total conversion mods would modify the core game .dlls. Sounds like something else is causing your problems, the kind of thing you'd get either with a pirate version of the game, or from meddling with hacks.

yeah, I've never heard of the AK mod, but if you had to move things around for it (and even if you didn't) chances are it's the mod that screwed things up for you. If you're calling the skin a mod then please don't because it's confusing.

here is what you do:

1. use winrar to open the downloaded skin file.

2. if the files in the .rar are "models" "materials" etc. just exctract directly to cstrike folder.

3. if not then I suggest you just find a new skin because the uploader didn't care enough about it to sort everything properly and chances are it won't be a good skin.

4. if all else fails, read the readme.txt

Kkty. Scroll down to model installation.

A skin can no way destroy your game. At most you'll get purple and black textures with no sound for that skin. Client.DLL is an application extension file, used by programs. Programs. Not skins. I use the same skin as your talking about. http://www.counter-strike-dl.com/download-1021.html I guess.

To install this model, do this.

Close CS:S.
Using WinRAR, extract the folders (Click "Extract To") and direct to the address ".../steam/steamapps/<Your Account Name>/counter-strike source/cstrike." The "..." represents your installation path. For the defualt it's C:\Program Files, but for some (i.e. me) it varies. The only folders you want selected are "sound" "scripts" "models" "materials" and then put them in the directory above. Let it overwrite all. Restart CS:S

You don't have to use WinRAR, but I recommend it. If you insist on using the Windows one, highlight all 4 folders, right click and find the "Extract to" or something similar. Use the same address as above. If you use 7zip or w hatever, you still extract it to the same address. I don't use that so I can't help you.
