Okay, so I can't handle not having a PC anymore. I'm even posting this at a friends house. I beg of you kind people, please help me pick out some new parts. My Case and power supply (antect tp 2 550 watts) are still good. I need...
CPU
RAM
Motherboard
Video Card
And OS (Not sure to go vista or XP, considering I really want DX10 to be fully functional)
I'd do it myself but I haven't kept up with the PC knowledge over the passed year.
Please help me out guys? And lets keep it under 700 bucks if possible.
I made one before that hit 651, but wasn't sure if it was even that great, and I was too dumb to save the links, as I'm not at my house haha.
Thanks<3

I'll have a look later but basically Core 2 Sexual Duo and Vista, then acquire XP.

wait a week for the 4870's to lower in price, then get one of them. As for processor, get an E8400 or similar. You can keep the proce of the mobo low, the same with the RAM.
And get Vista, people who complain about it haven't used it long enough. Ive had it three weeks and its great. I feel its better than XP.

Do you play any games like Sup Com etc?

Ohhh, lol, ATI. Heres something i whipped up in 5 minutes:
EVGA 9600GTCore 2 Quad E6600Vista home PremiumASUS P5K ProMushkin DDR2 1066 RAM 1GBYou can change around the RAM, its pretty cheap but it won't hold back the quad like if you got an E8400 or the like, and it should last quite a while, i can play crysis on my 9600GT on medium with no problems, and i have a crappy E4300. Total comes to 625 without shipping costs, and 2 sticks of RAM for a total of 2 gigs

this is probably asking alot out of a 700 dollar budget, but i want it to be able to run pretty much everything on high.
that does include crysis. It's gotta be possible haha
i want to run the high end stuff

That is asking way to much for 700 dollars, i have a system in the making that is supposedly able to run Crysis on Very High that is at a minimum of $1500 atm, and for High settings you need SLI or atleast a 9800GX2, not to mention a better processor to keep up, i think you could use the one i put together as a stepping stone while saving up for more powerful graphics, but for 700 dollars your gonna come up short

All I'll add to this thread is:
- Fuck DX10/Vista, there's nothing to gain by going there but a lot to lose.
- Knowing you, if you only spend $700, you'll be bitching to me in no time about how you can't run games.
- If you are going all-out, you don't need SLI or an 9800GX2, you need one of the new cards.

Define New cards?
I mean, im still up to speed with all my hardware knowledge except Video cards. Im not sure whats good anymore.
I just found this for a total of 625
IntelŪ Core2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz
NVIDIA nForce 750i SLI MBoard
2GB PC6400 DDR2 RAM
320GB 7200RPM SATA-II HD
NVIDIA GF 8500GT 1GB 16X Video

Jun 26 2008, 05:45 PM
That card is terrible and you'd also probably be better off getting a slightly lower clocked processor and taking the 5 minutes to overclock it, it'll save you money and allow better hardware in more important areas.
Also by new cards I think Elanzer means the GTX 260 / 280 or the 4870.

Heh, well, i forgot to read up on the R700, i thought it was just another card from ATI, lol. Anyway, if you can wait a bit longer, get a 4870 and keep the rest of the stuff i listed earlier

There's no point getting such high end other components if you're going to have just 1GB of RAM Minotaur. I'm looking around now by the way, not just trolling.

Well I mean. Look at it like this. I have a budget, and I want to be able to play pretty much everything currently out on moderately high settings. My old PC held up pretty nicely, until it caught fire. =(
Rifleman
Jun 26 2008, 05:55 PM
I know you have a budget but understand that card is worse than a 7600 GT which in turn is slightly faster than the 6800GT so it's worse than your current 7800.

I figured he could have added more himself if he wanted to, i said in my post with the included links that everything there and two stick of RAM for 2 gigs total would be ~$625 not including shipping

How would it hold it back? I'm obviously missing something and this is a good time to learn, i have no intent to argue about this.

ASUS P5K PROE8200 Wolfdale 2.66GHzHD 4870 512MBOCZ 2GB 800MHzIt doesn't have an OS yet but is there anyway you could transfer over your current licence? Also you get get rid of the 4870 and get a GTS 512 if you really want to but Operating Systems aren't hard to change later on, you could always get Minotaur's stick and get another later, yes it will hold it back for a but but it's better than being just OK for ever. If you wait a little while until the 4870 drops in price then you may be able to shove in XP in there.

No, there is no problem with using a PCI-E 2.0 card in a regular x16 slot that is on your motherboard, I am doing it right now with my 9600GT, and i have had no problems, and performance isn't affected at all. Quote from wiki "PCIe 2.0 is backward and forward compatible with PCIe v1.x. Graphic cards and motherboards designed for v2.0 will be able to work with v1.1 and v1.0, and vice versa."
Elanzer
Aug 7 2008, 10:03 AM
Like said above, if your motherboard doesn't support PCI-E 2.0 but your card does, or vice versa, then it will just function like regular PCI-E.
The benefit of PCI-E 2.0 is doubling bandwidth.

You've put all the stand offs under the motherboard and connected all the motherboard power cables and made sure the graphics card is in and has the power properly connected, and you have actually turned the switch on the back of it haven't you? It's most likely something you have or haven't done than a faulty PSU.

I dont think Im missing anything, but I could definately be wrong. i think im going to bring it in to my local Microcenter tommorow. If I missed something, theyd tell me, and if my PSU is busted, theyd tell me. Win win situation.
