Out soon. It's Tom Clancy so obviously the story is a load of shit, and it seems to be just a futuristic World in Conflict with the addition of the fancy new voice command system, but still, might be fun. Basic info:
QUOTE
United States of America
Joint Strike Force
Led by Ghost Recon main character Scott Mitchell, this group of elite soldiers is modeled after today's Marine Expeditionary Units which are known for their integration of air and ground combat elements. The Joint Strike Force (JSF) excels in precision firepower and is capable of rapid deployment anywhere in the world. Epitomizing the saying, "high speed, low drag", the JSF is built around small, fast, and light units. It also specializes in state-of-the-art stealth technology and battlefield robotics. The JSF has access to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Automated Sentry Drones, and state-of-the-art stealth technology.
European Federation
Enforcers Corps
Consummate professionals, the European Federation Enforcers Corps is made up of veteran elite counter-terrorist units and peacekeeping forces from throughout Europe. Calm and precise, these highly-trained and experienced soldiers are especially skilled in urban warfare. While their weaponry may not be as precise as those of the JSF and their units are slightly less armoured than the Spetsnaz, they excel in electronic warfare and advanced directed energy weapons, as well as more agile vehicles. Their ranks notably contain many previous members of the elite counter-terrorist unit Rainbow.
Russia
Spetsnaz Guard Brigade
Soldier for soldier, there is no force on the planet that can match the Spetznaz Guard Brigade in terms of raw brute force. Its members are all hardened veterans of Russia's many regional conflicts. Some say that these Brigades are made up of people who have seen too much of war and have lost any regard for human life. While this may be true, the Spetznaz Guard Brigade is a highly effective, determined, and deadly force. Its focus is on heavy weapons and heavy armor. They are also excellent and modifying what equipment they have on hand to suit their needs, so their vehicles often bristle with bolted-on weaponry that the original designer never intended or even dreamed of including.
--------------------
The game will feature optional voice commands so that the player may use a headset to give orders to their troops, although the troops will only react to valid and game-related orders in certain languages, but are able to understand many accents of those languages. It has been said by officials at Ubisoft Shanghai that, "You can control the whole game using voice controls if you wanted to." Hearing enemy soldiers communicate gives the player a strategic advantage to counter their attack with one of their own.
A prominent feature of the game is the Massively multiplayer online real-time strategy feature. Players choose a faction and engage in combat with players from opposing sides in roughly 40 battlefields spanning North America, Russia, and Europe, contributing to their side’s overall success and changing the front lines on the global map. In a Game Reactor interview, it was revealed that players will have a personal character, and each day the front lines of the overall war will be reset based on smaller battles that have taken place. A briefing before each match will inform the player of his or her previous actions and the current global situation, as well as the possible effects of the battle that they are about to fight. There can be hundreds of battles that last an indefinite amount of time in a single territory, with the victor being the side that was the most effective; there are plans to include game play recordings of the best players' battles. There will be multiple ways to initiate new combat on a continent that's already been captured by the enemy, some examples that were given were a "D-day" style invasion of France, amphibious landings in southern or northern Europe, and a mass invasion of Siberia through Alaska. there will be several different types of gameplay like Attrition, Siege, and Sabotage. If one faction completely defeats the others, the developers can create a new scenario based on the previous outcome and start the war over again. Also, according to Erik Brudvig, "Ubisoft didn't rule out a little 'interference' on their part if one faction was getting a little overambitious."

Sigh...if only it weren't an RTS :'(
Just me or does it seem that Tom Clancy games even approved by Clancy anymore. I remember way back, reading or hearing about how Tom Clancy had to approve of the games (for realism and whatnot) before they could slap his name on the game. Hell...even the books [now] with his name on them aren't written by him.

As far as I know when Ubisoft bought RedStorm they got rights to all the franchises as well as his name and can pretty much put it on what they like regardless of his input.

bummer, I don't think voice command has any room in an RTS setting (if I understand properly what it is). Game itself sounds neat, but no different from any other RTS out there, based on what you've said el, I would agree that it could be fun but not totally worth it.

I guess you don't understand properly what it is. It's pretty damn awesome, and helps eliminate the usual issues of console RTS. Watch this video for a demontration:
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/34557.htmlAdded some more stuff to the first post about voice control and multiplayer too.

wow! this kinda makes me wonder if this means it has potential as the first "not-totally-shit" RTS on a console. If voice commands are as intuitive as they say, it means it might actually be a decent 360 buy (in my eyes). Also, it looks like they have a somewhat CoH-like cover mechanic , you can see a few units using it somewhere in the middle of the video. I like the graphics. The game itself doesn't look like much new, but they way in which it has to be played might make it a blast.

Just as long as it isn't to unrealistic like the Ace Combat series or just plain stupid like Afterburner. I've never played a good modern combat flight simulator, it will be interesting to see how it turns out.

El, do you think there's some validity in what I was saying about voice command making this a possibly decent RTS on the 360... It makes sense to me but you know a lot more about this stuff than I do.
Also, why'd you change your avatar, my dad was just reading an article on BBC world about Afghanistan and one of the pictures featured in the article was your avatar. Any significance?

Jun 12 2008, 11:20 AM
It might, who knows until the demo arrives. I know it's definitely going to take voice control further in games though, people have been experimenting with it for a long time but this is the first game to really pull it off.
About HAWX though, I think it might be fun and it would be nice for a genre usually reserved for the hardcore simulations to get the 'accessible' touch, I'm just not expecting it to be too realistic or have a story that isn't going to make me angry.
Oh and Downloaded, if where I got my avatar from is significant then yes, there's some significance there.

Somebody confirm this for me. Is this game coming to PC? I'm seeing on GT that it is coming to PC, and then in my Game Informer it says it's not. Anyone have any info on that? I'm looking forward to it if it is, and if not, then I'll cry because I've been misguided.

Dammit el, you jump on this stuff so fast. When I've actually done my research I can't speak fast enough. Yeah, you won't NEED one but think of it... if they've put so much effort into a voice command system wouldn't it be a shame not to take advantage of it? If it works well it could be a pretty great experience.

The thing that stopped me from going AMAGAD AWESOME! Is the seeming limited unit variation... Doesn't it sort of seem that just two infantry units isn't really enough? It's too bad. If the voice control works the way they say it will, it really could have been awesome. If you say it's not worth the buy I believe it. I am however a little disappointed.
Elanzer
Sep 24 2008, 05:59 PM
Why disappointed now? It's been known for a while there would only be 7 unit types and the gameplay is very simple. If you were thinking it would be a CoH killer you were wrong, it's more along the lines of a World in Conflict slugfest.
Besides, I'm guessing you missed the interview where they said even though there's only 7 unit types, there's around 100 or so modifications you can make to them through field upgrades/veterancy bonuses.
