Crash, Bang, Nothing?!

Right, we've explained the interpolation and how that works, so now it's time to shoot someone.

Your heart is racing, palms are sweaty, caffeine pulsing through your veins like petrol through a Ferrari. Suddenly you see that terrorist run out in front of you, bomb on his back, about to tip your most important clan match the wrong way.
You aim, carefully, a lot depends on this shot. Then you hit fire.
Your aim was excellent, you hit him right in the head.

CUT TO BEHIND THE SCENES, IN COMPUTER LAND

PC: “Yeah! I hit that dirty terrorist, right in the head... I know I did, because I'm a computer I'm good at working stuff out, so let's paint some blood all over his greasy face! Boom, muahahaha!”

PC: “Oh, better tell the server we pwnd that noob!!”

PC: “Right, I worked out that in my interpolation, I hit him when he was in the 3rd 0 out of this load: 1000001000010001, yeah, right there when he was in one of them 0's, I blew his head off!”

Note: Valve in their wisdom decided to do a second 'check' on the pwnage at this point, this is how it happens:

Server: “Ahh, well done my little PC gamer, your l337ness impresses me.
Let me just check that your PC isn't lying though.
Ok, you were right there... in the sniper nest on dust. (Nice positioning, very good!)
And he was coming out of the door... then you shot....
*Wait, update from the other player, he's moved now!
Let's work out if you hit him now I have more movement information than you about that player you say you hit.... so no, you missed!”

PC: “Ok, I'm just a noob pc, you are far superior in knowledge oh l337 server, I shall not argue, he never died. But I've spent so long painting this blood on with great detail, that it's gonna stay now!”

CUT BACK TO INTELLEGENT EXPLAINATION

This is because the guessed position on my screen is not the position the server just got from the other player.
This happens for a few reasons, maybe because it takes the other player longer to send data because he has a higher ping... or maybe the other way around, he got data to the server, and you didn't get that before hitting fire. So you're shooting a position that has been guessed, so not entirely accurate.

Ping isn't the only thing that can effect this... badly loaded servers (like 20 cs source servers running on a P3 windows machine!), incorrect rates, data loss... it's all just a recipe for a bad gaming experience.
This whole experience of hitting someone, but it showing up as a miss is known as 'bad reg'

So, now we know what's going on, why we can't hit people, let's look at ways we can.
